Nigeria celebrates twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democracy

The Chairman of Bali Local Government Council, Habila Bala Balasa, the Chief of Mambilla in Sardauna Local Government Area, Doctor Shehu Audu Baju, and the Lamdo of Gashaka, Zubairu Hamman-Gabdo Sambo, have reflected on Nigeria’s twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic rule, describing the nation’s democratic journey as one that has recorded significant achievements despite existing challenges.

Speaking on the occasion of Democracy Day, the leaders highlighted improvements in education, infrastructure, public participation and governance as some of the gains recorded under democratic rule.

Chairman Balasa noted that increased access to education through the establishment of more universities and growing enrolment in secondary and tertiary institutions reflects positive progress in national development. He also pointed to ongoing road construction and other infrastructure projects, while acknowledging the need to rehabilitate ageing and dilapidated facilities.

According to him, government has continued to provide public amenities aimed at improving the welfare and standard of living of the people, adding that although population growth has placed pressure on available resources, development indicators continue to show progress across several sectors.

Balasa further stated that democracy has strengthened the relationship between government and citizens by promoting inclusion, bringing governance closer to the people and encouraging greater participation of women in leadership and community development.

In his remarks, the Chief of Mambilla, Doctor Shehu Audu Baju, said democracy has continued to create opportunities for development and citizen participation in governance, stressing the need for leaders to remain committed to delivering the dividends of democracy.

The Lamdo of Gashaka, Zubairu Hamman-Gabdo Sambo, called for sustained peace, unity and cooperation among Nigerians to strengthen democratic values and promote national development. He urged citizens to support democratic institutions, uphold peaceful coexistence and continue praying for wisdom and good governance for leaders at all levels.

He also appealed to the people of Taraba State to support their leaders, expressing optimism that with accountability, commitment and collective responsibility from both leaders and citizens, the state and the nation would continue to record greater progress.

The three leaders expressed confidence that Nigeria’s democracy would continue to deepen and deliver more benefits for present and future generations, while calling on residents of Taraba State to remain law-abiding, support government policies and work together to sustain democratic values.
